Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave.
Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is described as a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first 2 years of life.” (National institute of Mental Health- NIMH). Autism affects 1 in 36 children.

What are the signs of Autism?

  • Delayed or no speech
  • Loss of previously acquired speech
  • Echolalia (repetition of words)
  • Limited communication, including gestures (pointing, waving, etc.)
  • Hyperactive, impulsive, and/or inattentive behavior
  • Unusual eating and sleeping habits
  • Unusual mood or emotional reactions
  • Lack of fear or more fear than expected
  • Repetitive movements and motor behavior (hand flapping, rocking body, spinning in circles)
  • Delay in motor skills
  • Hypersensitivity to certain stimuli (light, sounds, textures, smells)
  • Avoids or does not keep eye contact
  • Does not show facial expressions such as happy, sad, angry, and surprised
  • No joint attention or shared interest with others
  • Does not notice other children and join them in play
  • Restricted or repetitive behaviors/routines, insistence on sameness, obsessive interests
  • Trouble with transitions
  • Challenging or aggressive behavior
  • Lines up toys or other objects and gets upset when order is changed
  • Plays with toys the same way every time
  • Delayed or limited imaginary play
  • Cognitive impairments

What are the treatments for Autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is considered the gold standard treatment for individuals with autism, as it is research-based, individualized, and has the most evidence for long term treatment. Here at Ascent, we implement individualized, effective, and high-quality ABA therapy to help our patients and caregivers to have the best outcomes. We utilize the most recent and effective research and evidence-based data across behavior science, trauma-informed therapy, and compassionate care to deliver the highest quality of ethical and compassionate care to our clients. If your child has many of the potential signs of autism but does not have a diagnosis, we provide resources and support on how to take the next steps.

Explore the Process

If your child has not yet been diagnosed with Autism...

  1. Complete an inquiry form for us to contact you and get to know you and your child better.
  2. We will follow up with you and learn more about your child and your family’s individual needs and schedule a free consultation to help you navigate your next steps.
  3. Come visit! We will meet with you for a free consultation on next steps and tour our facility, while answering all your questions.
  4. We will then provide resources and information on the steps of getting your child assessed and diagnosed.
  5. Following diagnosis, call us and we will send you the intake paperwork. We will work with your insurance company to get your child ready to begin ABA therapy!
  6. Come meet your BCBA to begin the assessment process. Discuss concerns and family goals, and then your BCBA will spend time with your child to identify current skills and barriers for your child. Your BCBA will develop a personalized treatment plan based on the information you provide and observation of your child.
  7. Happy first day! We will schedule your child’s first day and welcome your child into our fun and supportive therapy environment to help them achieve their full potential.
